A Better Combat mod download should start with compatibility, not with the first file name you recognize. Minecraft version, loader family and dependencies all have to agree before a profile is ready for testing.
Start with the Minecraft version
Open the launcher profile or modpack manifest and record the exact Java Edition version. Better Combat publishes builds for specific game branches, so a nearby version number is not a safe substitute.
Match the mod loader
Choose a file built for the loader in that profile. Fabric and NeoForge are current project platforms, while Forge appears in the project history for selected older branches. Never place a Fabric build into a NeoForge profile or the reverse.
Check dependencies before launch
Release requirements can include playerAnimator and, on some versions, Cloth Config API. Resolve those dependencies for the same game branch before troubleshooting the Better Combat file itself.
Treat the provided ZIP correctly
The main website download points to the provided project archive. A source/project archive is not automatically the same thing as a ready-to-use loader-specific mod JAR. Use it only for the purpose appropriate to that archive and confirm the installable release for your profile.
Use a backup-first test
Copy important worlds and configuration folders before changing a combat mod. Test Better Combat with required dependencies first, then add companion weapons and animation mods one at a time.
